Candidates:

When asked, “What's the most important factor in a successful contract engagement?” the majority of respondents, 66 percent, answered “Your professional skill set matching the project's needs.” Another 17 percent think it's a clearly defined role or project. Eleven percent responded that their interaction with the team is the most important factor. Hours and location are paramount for 6 percent.

Clients:

When asked, “What is the most important factor in a successful engagement with a contract employee?” the majority of respondents, 41 percent, answered “The contractor's ability to function independently.” Another 25 percent think it's a clearly defined role or project for the contractor. The contractor's professional skill set and ability to work with the team tied with 17 percent of the votes.
